NSW: Man in court charged with attempted murder of hitchhiker

A Hunter Valley man has appeared in a New South Wales court on attempted murder and
abduction charges after allegedly threatening a female hitchiker with a gun.

Police allege the 24-year-old man picked up a 25-year-old woman hitchhiking in the Metford
area yesterday and drove her to an industrial area where he threatened her with a firearm.

Police say the woman escaped and flagged down a nearby security vehicle.

The man is charged with attempted murder, detaining a person for advantage and discharging
a firearm with intent to inflict grevious bodily harm.

He's been remanded to reappear in Maitland Local Court tomorrow.
