Multicultural Affairs Minister GARY HARDGRAVE says most asylum seekers in detentioncentres do the right thing.

A stand-off developed at the Curtin detention centre in Western Australia yesterdayafter more than 300 detainees refused to negotiate with authorities.

Officers wanted a handover of any weapons and ring leaders involved in Friday night'sriot, which resulted in substantial property damage and injuries to 28 staff.

Mr HARDGRAVE has told the Nine Network that most people in detention centres do the right thing.

But he says there are a few troublemakers and some are isolated to get them out ofthe pack while staff deal with their concerns.
